Published in 1778 in Germany, this elegant cartoon depicts Father Time using a magic lantern to project the image of a teapot exploding among frightened British troops as American troops advance, as figures representing World players look on.

The Great Transcendentalist Organ Complete in Four Volumes 1840-44 $6,000

The Dial (Boston). Vol. 1, No. 1 (July 1840) to Vol. 4, No. 4 (April 1844), comprising sixteen issues, a complete run, bound in four volumes of 19th century black cloth.  Octavos.  Bindings VG, with modest wear to spine heads.  Contents VG,with considerable foxing. The original owner, perhaps a contributor to the magazine, has written in light pencil at the head of each piece the names of the semi-anonymous authors. The Dial was edited, in its first two years, by the intellectual and feminist Margaret Fuller and, in its last two years, by Ralph Waldo Emerson and, for one issue when Emerson was traveling, Henry David Thoreau. Each issue featured essays, poetry, and reviews by Emerson (94 contributions), Thoreau (29 contributions, many to be later included in A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, including “Sympathy” in Volume 1, #1, Thoreau’s first appearance in print), Fuller, James Russell Lowell, Theodore Parker, George Ripley, future founder of Brook Farm, and others.  Included with this set is an attractive reprint of the comprehensive index issued by the Rowfant Club in 1901.

A Bigoted Street Thug Becomes a Martyr in Anti-Catholic Riots 1844 $400

John Magee. The Death of George Shifler in Kensington. (Philadelphia: William Smith, 1844) 18 x 11.5. Hand-colored lithograph. VG. This print depicts George Shifler (or Schiffler) being struck down during the Kensington Philadelphia Bible Riots of May 1844. He was killed, supposedly, while defending an American flag, by shots fired from the Hibernia Hose Company firehouse. This is the first edition of this print, issued in the spring. The second edition, issued in the summer, lists the last names of other nativist casualties of the riots.

Matagorda Texas Colorado House Hotel Lettersheet 1850s $300

This is an uncolored lettersheet (complete) with seven views of buildings in Matagorda, Texas. Most prominent among the views is one of the Hotel at Matagorda, Texas, with the name Colonado House on the front. 10.75 x 8.5  VG, toned. The views were drawn by Helmuth Holtz and lithographed by Ed. Lang of Hamburg. Milgram states This is an interesting lettersheet because it appears to have been printed in Hamburg, Germany, although it may only be saying that the engraver was from Hamburg.

A remarkable likeness, possibly drawn during the June 1860 Democratic Convention in Baltimore, based on Douglas’ official campaign portrait taken by Matthew Brady in 1860. The artist’s name appears to be Bentham, but we have been unable to locate anyone by that name working in Baltimore at that time. 

Frank Leslie’s War Maps #2 Scarce Civil War Periodical 1861 $500

Frank Leslie’s War Maps #2. Broadsheet. 22.5 x 16. VG except split along spine. This obscure Leslie publication was issued nine times between 1861 and 1864. It was eight pages long and given over almost entirely to maps of war zones. This is the second issue (or Second Edition) published in 1861 with maps of Hilton Head, Port Royal, South Carolina coast, Savannah Bay, New Orleans. The entire Confederacy, the seat of war on the Potomac, Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, and others.

John McLenan Unpublished Full Color Caricature of Horace Greeley 1862 $2,000

This is an unpublished full-color watercolor by the great John McLenan (1820-65) depicting Greeley, carrying a sheaf of papers labeled Irish Relief Fund,  in front of the New York Tribune office. The Tribune promoted relief for the poor in Ireland in 1862.

Cleveland, Lady Liberty, and Civil Service Reform by Nast x Two 1885 $5,000

Thomas Nast. Victory– For the Moment and This Would Be a Lasting Victory! Two original pen and ink drawings, both signed Th: Nast. Both reveals: 8.25 x 8.25. Mat: 13.75 x 23.50. VG+ on thick paper. Modest soiling and a dent to the first drawing and even toning to the second. This set of two cartoons, which appeared on page 767 of the November 21, 1885, issue of Harper’s Weekly (which is sold with the art), is a good example of Nast’s later work at its best: well-drawn, artfully composed, and with a strong and simple message. 

Racist Native American Comic Strip from Puck 1886 $500

J. S. Goodwin. Higher-Water, A Tale of the Bad Lands. Pen and ink original. 13 x 9.25. This five-panel strip depicts two Indians vying for the affections of a squaw, with fatal consequences. Attractively laid out with intricate borders. The cartoon appeared on page 32 of Puck on Wheels #6 (1886).
